THE RETURN: Before the Reveal

Something enormous is taking shape.

My newest Threaddora creation measures 8 feet wide by 4 feet high-a sweeping, hand-sculpted world made entirely with embroidery thread. Its beautiful skies will draw you inward, but the depth of what lies beneath them may leave you mesmerized.

This is not simply a large artwork. It carries time, tension, memory and meticulous labor in every carefully placed strand. To understand its presence, you will have to stand before it. Photographs and video will never fully communicate what it feels like to face a view this humongous.

The complete artwork will be revealed in person when I decide where to present my exhibition, THE RETURN.

For now , I will offer a few clues.

The story reaches across a river toward a place where my life could have taken a dramatically different direction. Years ago, I wanted to enter the Port Authority Police Academy. Then I became pregnant. I wanted to have my baby quickly enough to continue pursing that path-but life chose another direction for me.

Today, I believe my daughter may have saved my life.

A former classmate of mine, Lavisha, did become a police officer. About a year after the towers were attacked, I unexpectedly ran into her while shopping in Manhattan. She told me that she and the other officers had just changed shifts and left before everything  happened.

Their police station required two separate elevator rides to reach. I had once been there myself on a rainy day. High above the city, I could feel the building gently swaying-as it was designed to do.

Lavisha did not learn what happened until she was nearly home.  When she arrived, she saw her husband knelling in front of the television, crying. He believed he had lost her. When he saw her, he held her tight as he could.

As she shared that memory with me, we cried and embraced right there.

That moment has never left me.

Perhaps a few raindrops will appear within the artwork or the sky will carry more than beauty. And perhaps, hidden among thousands upon thousands of strands, you will feel how close one life can come to becoming another.

I will not reveal the location yet.

I will not reveal the entire story yet.

But when THE RETURN is finally shown, you will understand why this artwork

had to be eight feet wide.
